Impressionist is back! One of Philadelphia’s most unique bands, the 7-piece ensemble features musicians both self-taught and classically-trained, their collective resume spanning the furthest reaches of rock, jazz, metal, and classical. With several members switching between instruments, Impressionist often sounds like a completely different band than the one you were listening to when the song started.
Despite defying easy categorization, the release of their third album, There Is No Try, sees Impressionist settling into a sound distinctly their own. A powerful foundation of drums, marching-band percussion, and detuned guitars is augmented by Sun Ra indebted horn players, electric piano and synthesizers. Meanwhile, Kyle Press’s vocals explore the full range of the human voice, from a soaring Bruce Dickinson-esque roar, to a haunting Thom Yorke-ian croon, to Tuvan throat singing. There is even some rapping thrown in for good measure.
The songs are often long and contain multiple movements, horn solos, and atmospheric transitions. This is music equally indebted to the twisted anthems of Radiohead’s OK Computer and the grand textural experiments of Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew era bands. Throw in some King Crimson and Battles for good measure and you start to get an idea.
There Is No Try is the follow-up to 2016’s very long EP / very short album, Keep Trying. Both are being released on one CD by Bunny Cat Records on Thursday 11/1 at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia. Also performing are Cincinnati’s premier drums and cello experimental punk band, Lung, and Philadelphia-based noise-emo (nomo? emoise?) outfit Great Weights.
"Helmed by local sax player Kyle Press, Philly’s Impressionist channel the fearless spirit of late 70s downtown NYC – the free jazz and no-wave and no-wave adjacent art rock community that spawned Sonic Youth, Swans and more. The band is a fearless swirl of sound and energy, roaring guitars and racing drums and spectral horns and keys — the visual metaphor in their band name is apt, and the sound teeters among states of being from desperation to desire." - John Vettese, The Key
Sometimes they sound like The Cranberries made a doom metal album (with cello), other times they just sound like they're kicking your teeth in. Furthermore, they are super nice! Impressionist
We love bands who evolve and Great Weights are the epitome of evolution. They weilded noise rock and post hardcore over their gooey emo core like some sort of armor, and then they got really angry. Impressionist
